Heat continues to move through New Mexico

NEW MEXICO (KRQE) – Hot temperatures blanketed the state once again today, with a handful of locations either tying or breaking their previous record high temperature. Isolated showers have also been moving through much of southern New Mexico. However, a lot of these showers have not been making it to the surface. Similar conditions will be in place heading into Sunday. A weak cold front will move through eastern New Mexico by Monday afternoon, bringing a more significant drop in high temperatures to that half of the state. It will also increase the chance for rain on Monday in eastern New Mexico, with spotty afternoon storm chances in the central, northern, and western parts of the state. High pressure builds in overhead again by the middle of the week, bringing in hotter temperatures and a dip in rain chances by Wednesday. All of the victims were treated on-site and transported to Winn Army Community Hospital for further treatment, the post said. The nature of their injuries was not immediately clear, and the incident remains under investigation. In an earlier alert announcing the lockdown, Fort Stewart said multiple 'casualties" had been reported and that law enforcement was on the scene. The base, which is located about 40 miles southwest of Savannah, is home to the U.S. Army's 3rd Infantry Division. About 10,000 people, including soldiers, family members and civilian employees, live there, according to its website. In a separate post on X, the 3rd Infantry Division urged soldiers to 'stay inside, close and lock all windows and doors.' Gates to the base were closed and some schools in the area were briefly placed on lockdown. The FBI in Atlanta said on X that its office in Savannah was aware of the incident and "coordinating with the Army's Criminal Investigation Division for any assistance that might be needed." President Trump was briefed on the shooting, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said. Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp wrote on X that he was "in close contact with law enforcement on the ground," adding that his family was "saddened by today's tragedy." The installation was locked down at 11:04 a.m. with law enforcement responding to the scene. 'Casualties have been reported and the situation is ongoing,' the post added. Those residing on the base were ordered the stay inside, close and lock all windows and doors, and report to the appropriate leadership. The lockdown order also extends to the Wright and Evans Army Airfield. 'We are currently assessing the situation but we can confirm an active shooter,' Lieutenant Colonel Angel Tomko told The Associated Press. Located about 40 miles southwest of Savannah, Fort Stewart is the largest Army post east of the Mississippi River. It's home to thousands of soldiers assigned to the Army's 3rd Infantry Division.
